Kamal Aljafari

SILVER SERIES #9
Photo Kamal Large

Kamal Aljafari’s work centers on the politics of memory and archives. In this retrospective, we are given insight into his longtime project of unearthing erased histories of Palestinian people.

About this edition

Aljafari’s films treat the erasure of Palestinians not only as a historical and political issue but also as an aesthetic issue. In his work, Aljafari often reconstructs lost territories using visual material from archives, in order to create a phantasmagorical image of Palestine. Through aesthetic interventions such as blurring, smudging and abstracting images, Aljafari treats the image itself as a space of inquiry.

For the opening of Silver Series #9 on November 7th, Kunstnernes Hus will host a conversation with Aljafari following the screening of several of his key works from the past decades. His distinctive approach to archival material as a tool for dealing with stolen history raises important questions—not only for those familiar with his films but for a wider dialogue about the role of filmmaking in reclaiming histories that have been silenced or neglected. Aljafari's work prompts us to consider how moving images can be used as a critical tool for reimagining the past.

The Silver Series screening series presents audiovisual works by internationally renowned artists in the cinema at Kunstnernes Hus. This program is curated by Abirami Logendran.
