Johannes Sveinsson Kjarval

01.06.60 – 25.06.60
Jóhannes Sveinsson Kjarval

In 1960, Kunstnernes Hus showed the Jóhannes Sveinsson Kjarval exhibition, which consisted of oil paintings, brush drawings, watercolours, marker drawings, chalk drawings, charcoal drawings and gouaches made by the Icelandic artist Jóhannes Sveinsson Kjarval. This was the first exhibition of Kjarval's collected works in Norway.

58 works had been collected for the exhibition on loan from institutions, public and private collections.

Jóhannes Sveinsson Kjarval (1885-1972) was an Icelandic painter. He used elements from impressionism, symbolism and expressionism which he mixed to create his own expression. Originally, Kjarval was a fisherman and sailor, but during a trip to England he was so taken by the landscape paintings of William Turner that he wanted to become a painter himself. He then trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.

Kjarval often painted the Icelandic landscape, often in an expressionist style, and with elements from surrealism and cubism.

Kjarval is represented by, among others, the National Museum.

Extract from the catalogue
