Mabell Holand: Queerness, visibility and unity - with art as a magnifying glass
Tuesday 13.02.24
KH JH Walk Silently 7317

Plot/Oslo and Karmaklubb* invite you between the ages of 18 and 25 to a free guided tour and conversation workshop in the exhibition Walk Silently in the Dark Until Your Feet Become Ears by Pauline Boudry and Renate Lorenz!

About the event

Part 1: Duration approximately 45 minutes

Mabell Holand and Tine Semb (Karmaklubb*) welcome you and guide you through the exhibition Walk Silently in the Dark Until Your Feet Become Ears by Pauline Boudry and Renate Lorenz. The artist duo is particularly known for their work on queerness, and their films, performances, and installations are showcased in art institutions worldwide. In the exhibition at Kunstnernes Hus, the recurring theme is being (in)visible. The works explore the significance of queer voices, diversity, and identity that emerge in public spaces, while also addressing how being visible – being seen as "different" – can be challenging and create feelings of vulnerability. Mabell and Tine will also reflect on their own experiences related to this theme.

Part 2: Duration approximately 90 minutes (including a break)

After the tour, Mabell will lead a conversation workshop exploring the intersection of identity, art, and personal expression. With the exhibition as a backdrop, we will delve into how identity can serve as a foundation for artistic expression, and what exactly constitutes queer art. We acknowledge that art is not exempt from societal norms – but how do we navigate past dominant aesthetic values? Plot welcomes you to a collective thought experiment. In a safe context, we will continue the conversation about otherness.

Tine Semb and Karmaklubb*

Karmaklubb* is a nomadic queer platform with a focus on creating encounters and critically exploring a diversity of public spaces – from street and city spaces to museums and larger institutions. An example of such collaborations is an ongoing series of museal experiments, "Queering the museum," aiming to challenge – with a queer perspective – the structures of these types of spaces or institutions and the authorities they represent. These have so far included institutions such as the National Museum, Preus National Museum of Photography (exhibitions; film production; events; public art), KODE Art Museums and Composer Homes, the Vigeland Museum, and the Munch Museum (Tøyen and Lambda). Additionally, Karmaklubb* has collaborated with numerous small and medium-sized institutions, including Khartoum Contemporary Art Center, Office for Contemporary Art Norway (OCA), Trøndelag Center for Contemporary Art, Kunstnernes Hus, Bergen Kunsthall, Bergen Kjøtt, BIT Teatergarasjen, and DePaul Art Museum in Chicago.

The project portfolio consists of around 250 projects, including club nights, panel discussions, artist presentations, curatorial projects, film screenings, concerts, performances, drag shows, wine tastings, and other gastronomic delights, as well as existing as an international research and publishing platform: IGWTLI publishing. Karmaklubb* is a celebration of good things, led by Tine Semb – artist (MFA 2010), editor, organizer, and much more.
