Cathedral

The Cathedral is a multigenerational family drama about the Jewish-American Damrosch family and their only child, Jesse. The film deals with the rise and fall of the family through the 1980s and 1990s told through Jesse's meditative reflections. The narrative is strongly shaped by events such as the AIDS-related death of his uncle, Jesse's strained relationship with his father, the bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993, and the presidency of George W. Bush.

The Norwegian premiere of the film is presented in collaboration with the culture magazine Tidens ånd.

With The Cathedral, Ricky D'Ambrose vaults to a major voice in American cinema.

About the film

Autobiographical films where directors look back at their own childhood have not exactly been in short supply in recent years, but with The Cathedral Ricky D'Ambrose hasserved us one of the very best. Although the film has been featured at several of the biggest international festivals and frequently popped up on lists of last year's best films, it has flown under the radar of many.

35-year-old D'Ambrose impressively demonstrates a special ability to unfold his childhood through beautiful, impressionistic images, explored through objects, gestures and tangled memories full of human passion and anxiety. The entire film exudes a tremendous control that is only possible with the power of recollection and an extraordinary talent.
