Sleeplessness and Nostalgia in Beirut
Thursday 09.03.23
The fifth and final edition of our program series on moods and currents in recent Arab cinema presents The Insomnia of a Serial Dreamer (2020) by a pioneer in Lebanese cinema, Mohamed Soueid. This is a rare piece of cinema, fueled by the director's lack of sleep and based on interviews with various people and friends shot in Beirut over a period of 15 years. The filmmaker will be in conversation with author and researcher Rana Issa after the screening.
About the film
To deal with his insomnia, Mohamed Soueid meets various people and close friends and asks them to tell him stories that could help him get a good night's sleep. Shot over a period of 15 years in a multitude of locations across Beirut, the tale brushes with melancholy, yearning, tenderness, everyday camaraderie, personal histories, and an all-consuming love of cinema.
