Torsten Renqvist
Torsten Renqvist had a well-established position as a painter and graphic artist when he began working with sculpture in the mid-1960s. His first exhibition as a sculptor - in the autumn of 1967 at Galleri Doktor Glas in Stockholm - was met with astonishment and critical reservations. The works were made of iron, the style was rough and sketchy, the representations revolved around a deeply human theme of an existential nature. The sculptures pointed in different directions formally; with almost demonstrative clarity they appeared to have been made for a specific purpose, that the style was more the result of inner necessity than a question of style. They expressed a humanistic stance that permeates all of his work.
