Om utstillingen

Kunstneres Hus opened the winter season in 1941 with solo exhibitions by Søren Steen-Johnsen and Eyolf Nagell Erichsen. The artists exhibited over 70 works each, Steen-Johnsen with works created in the last three years, between 1937 and 1940, and Erichsen with a largely retrospective exhibition, with works from 1929 to 1940. The reviewer in Dagbladet referred to the exhibitions as a bright spot in the cold and dark month. (Dagbladet 03.01.1941)

About the artists

Søren Steen-Johnsen (1903-1979) was educated at Statens Håndverks og Kunstindustriskole, Kristiania under Eivind Engebretsen and Wilhelm Krogh-Fladmark 1921-24, a student of Axel Revold's School of Painting, Oslo 1924-25, Statens Kunstakademi, Oslo under Axel Revold 1925 and 1929-30, under Wilhelm Rasmussen 1929-30, and École Moderne, Paris under Per Krohg 1925-26. He worked with the Revold students, including Harald Dal, Reidar Aulie, Willi Midelfart, Eyolf Nagell-Erichsen and Ole Mæhle, who exhibited together at home and abroad. They were characterized by their social criticism and political commitment. Under Ekeberg (1939) and Winter Day, Oslo (1939), which are in the National Museum, were shown at this exhibition. In the factory and cityscapes, the city is always large and threatening, with an undertone of social unrest; the people are often lonely and defenseless. Steen-Johnsen's landscapes from this period are characterized by a somewhat heavy manner of painting, dark colouring and saturated picture surfaces. Steen-Johnsen also worked with woodcuts.

Eyolf Nagell-Erichsen (1908-1979) was first received education at Statens Håndverks- og Kunstindustriskole, Oslo 1923-24. He belongs to the first cohort of Revold students who manifested themselves at the exhibition of the Seven Young Artists' Association in 1926. His pictures are rare in a Norwegian context: he worked in a convincing and genuine Romantic-naïve style. He can be grouped together with fellow painters Reidar Aulie and Willi Midelfart and Søren Steen-Johnsen, with whom he had this exhibition at the same time.
