2016 Aurdal Rekomponert

Welcome to the unveiling of Siri Aurdal's sculpture Bølgelengder - rekomponert under the auspices of OSLO PILOT. Kunstnernes Hus and OSLO PILOT have collaborated on a project dealing with the work of Siri Aurdal (b. 1937), a Norwegian artist who was at her most active in the 1960s and 70s. The project consists of a number of indoor and outdoor presentations of Aurdal's sculptures and models, in addition to a book published by the artist Eline Mugaas (b. 1969).

About the artist

Aurdal is an innovative figure in Norwegian contemporary art history due to her experimental use of materials and monumental installations where the public has played an active and participatory role. As a member of the radical artist group GRAS, Aurdal developed an approach to the material that combined mathematics with industrial and organic forms and highlighted art's social and political potential. She created the modular work Surroundings (1969) by cutting up and reconfiguring prefabricated fiberglass and polyester tubes, materials that were developed as part of the Norwegian oil industry. The first time the sculpture was shown, at Kunstnernes Hus in 1969, Aurdal invited the visitors to climb on it, write on it and transform it into a social space.

About the project

The project's starting point and driving force is Eline Mugaas' long-term effort to document and archive Aurdal's work, and the exploration of the possibility of reviving a past that constantly speaks to the present. The project also explores notions of origin and originality in art production.

This presentation is part of a larger collaborative project to show Siri Aurdal's work: a solo exhibition, a book publication and the outdoor installation of the sculpture Bølgelengder - rekomponert. This last stage of the project is organized by OSLO PILOT and Kunstnernes Hus in collaboration with the Vigelands Museum, and the sculpture is displayed in Vigelandsparken. It has been produced by OSLO PILOT and Kunstnernes Hus and will be available to the public until 30 November.
