1952 Christian Krohg Katalogforside

A memorial exhibition in honour of Christian Krohg was held at Kunstnernes Hus in 1952, since it was 100 years since he was born. The famous painter and author was known for painting everyday scenes with a naturalistic expression. This exhibition was his first since 1930, when the house opened. The memorial exhibition contained a total of 155 works and featured a number of paintings that were less familiar to the public. Per Krohg, Christian Krohg's son, as well as Reidar Revold and Reidar Aulie spent six months collecting various works for the exhibit. These were obtained from different museums and private collections, both in Norway and abroad.

Excerpt from the catalog

". . . . there are already new crowds of workers in the image of time ready to go out with their paint boxes and field easels, they are the ones who will replace us someday despise us - and then we will probably have the fate that the others will raise embellishing tombs over us in the cemetery of authority. - But it will be the same. We greet the new crowds. Go forth! Relieve us and despise us! There are many of you who will not come back again, but under the suffering of restless striving you will feel the pleasure that lies in filling one's soul with the thought of time and being used by it. and hurry, for the time has no time, the time is in a hurry - . . . ."

- Christian Krohg, 1886

...

"This exhibition is our contribution to the celebration of Chr. Krohgs 100th anniversary. Few institutions owe him more than Kunstnernes Hus, despite the fact that it was only inaugurated five years after his death. He was one of the artists who made the greatest contribution - right from the 1880s - to providing the financial basis for the artists' own exhibition building. Characteristically, a Chr. Krohg exhibition was the first ever organized by Kunstnernes Hus, at that time combined with an exhibition by Per Krohg.

However, it is of course not only this one special reason that has encouraged us to create the exhibition. We are doing it first and foremost because Chr. Krohg was one of our most important artists, because for almost 50 years he was the central figure in Norwegian art scene. And we are doing it because we believe that his life's work will always have significant value to offer. We don't want to bury him in the “cemetery of authorities”. Artists will be inspired by his willingness to renew and develop both in terms of experience and form of expression. Everyone will be touched by his openness to life and his warmth, his enthusiastic and courageous fight for ideals that are and always will be in a living society."
