Bjarne Ness

12.04.47 – 04.05.47
1947 Halvdan Egedius og Bjarne Ness katalogforside

Bjarne Ness was a Norwegian artist who lived from 1902 to 1927. He was born in Trondheim and moved to Paris shortly before his unfortunate death. The exhibition showcased a collection of his paintings, watercolors, and drawings created between 1917 and 1927. Ness’s artistic style was characterized by the use of bold colors and simplified motifs, avoiding naturalistic representation. He was very interested with horses, and it is evident in his works and in pieces like Composition (1926) and Gjøglere (1927). This exhibition, held alongside works by Halfdan Egedius, took place from April 12 to May 4, 1947.

From the catalogue

While Egedius and Werenskiold were his biggest masters in shaping Bjarne Ness’s drawing skills, it was Revold who played a key role in refining his color vision. The composer Bjarne Ness, known for works like Gjøglerne and Musikanten, fully blossomed in his use of color after meeting Revold, expressing a rich, clear palette. Although traces of the melancholic tone from his early years still emerged at times, such as in the touching Sunday Afternoon (a children's group under tall trees), it was his admiration for great French painters like Delacroix, Cézanne, and later Seurat and Courbet that deeply influenced his style. Ness felt a particular kinship with Seurat, valuing the mathematical precision and beauty in his work. However, after years of toil and disappointment, he finally arrived in Paris, he was very much captivated by Courbet, who was a completely new revelation to him. Seurat, who sought the perfect and absolute, single-volume mathematics, was his spiritual brother. But Courbet, the primitive, was in connection with the earth's own life, the lush, the healthy, that which could perhaps save him."
