15 artists from L’École de Paris

In the spring of 1952, Kunstnernes Hus, in collaboration with Galerie Paul Hervieu from Nice, showed an exhibition with 15 artists: Paul Augustin Aïzpiri, Jean Carzou, Antoni Clave, Michel de Gallard, Jean Labasque, Pierre-César Lagage, Luis Molné, Claude Venard, Bernard Buffet, Eugène Paul (Gen-Paul), Edouard Goerg, Bernard Lorjou, Jean Osouf, James Coignard, Georges Sanh. A total of 117 works of art were exhibited in the techniques of oil painting, bronze sculpture and ceramics.
AIZPIRI
Born 4/5/1919 in Paris. Pupil of the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts 1936-39. First solo exhibition at Galerie Parvillée, Paris 1943. Exhibited regularly at Salon d'Automne, Salon des Indépendants, Salon de Mai. Salon des Tuileries and at group exhibitions at Galerie Charpentier. Has exhibited in New York, Liége, Lisbon, Copenhagen and Stockholm. Received the Prix de la Jeune peinture in 1945 and the Prix National in 1951. 15 pictures have been purchased by the French state, of which 3 in 1951. Represented in the Musée de Liége, Vervier.
CARZOU
Born 1.1.1907. After artium he studied architecture and in 1929 received an architectural diploma. But from 1925 he also attended the free academies at Montparnasse and in 1927 received the Conté prize for charcoal drawing. Has exhibited regularly since 1934 in various Paris galleries, among others Drouant-David in 1945, 1948 and 1951 and Durand-Ruel in 1948. Has participated in the Salon des Indépendants, Salon des Surindependants, Salon d'Automne, Salon des Tuileries, Salon de la Marine etc. In 1949 won fourth prize from Hallmark (among 6,000 candidates) and second prize from Peinture Contems poraine. Represented in the Musée d' Art Moderne, Paris and museums in Nice, _Kansas City (U.S.A.), as well as Lyon, Rouen, Alexandria and Cairo.
ANTONI CLAVE
Born in Barcelona 1913. Has lived in Paris since 1939. Exhibited regularly since 1943 at the Paris salons and at group exhibitions in the Galerie Charpentier. Represented in the Musée d' Art Moderne, Paris, in museums in Barcelona and Prague and at Tate Gallery's Friends, London. Has illustrated a number of books, including Merimée's "Lettre d' Espagne" and "Carmen", Pushkin's "La Dame de Pique" and Voltaire's "Candide". Made decorations for "Los Caprichos" for Ballets Champs Elysées 1946, "Carmen" for Ballets Roland Petit 1949, "Ballabile" for Sadler's Wells Ballet 1950, "La Maison de Bernarda" for Théatre de l'Oeuvre 1951, Revanche" for Ballets Champs Elysées 1951. He is currently in Hollywood to create decorations for a film for Goldwyn-Niayer.
MICHEL d e GALL ARD
Born 22/4/1921. Began studying medicine at Clermont. Has studied with Lorjou and Desnoyer. Made together with Lorjou and Buffet "Manifeste de l'homme Témoin". Received 2nd Prix National in 1949, Prix de l'institut ä la Nationale, Prix Portica at the Biennale de Menton 1951. Has participated regularly in the following Paris salons: Indépendants, Automne, Mai, la Nationale, des Jeunes Peintres. Purchased by the French state.
JEAN LABASQUE
Born 18.8.1902. Has exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, Salon des Tuileries (at its founding), Salon du Temps Précent. Has exhibited in most Paris galleries and is represented in a number of private collections in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Sweden, the U.S.A., Argentina etc. Is also represented in the Musée du Louvre (Paul Jamot's legacy), the Musée National d'Art Moderne and museums in Reims, Céret etc. as well as in the royal library in Winsor.
PIERRE -CESAR LAGA GE
Born 29/9/1911 in Croix (North). Studied at l'Ecole de Roubaix. Moved 1938 to Paris. Purchased by the French state in 1938, by various provincial museums and by the museum in Lodz in Poland. Solo exhibitions in Paris, Tourcoing, Roubaix and Lille 1932, Lodz (Poland) 1935, Katowice and Warsaw 1937, Brüssel 1938, Paris 1938, 1941 and 1942, Stockholm 1947, Malmö 1948, Drouant-David in Paris 1949, Copenhagen 1950, Gothenburg and Malmö (group exhibition) 1951, Brüssel 1952.
LUIS MOLNÉ
Born 1907 in Barcelona. Lived in France from 1937. Participated in Salon des Indépendants and Salon d'Automne. Held several solo exhibitions in Paris (Galerie Roux Hentschel), Lyon, Grenoble, Cannes, Nice, Monte Carlo. Participated in group exhibitions in Prague, Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmô. Represented in the Musée National d'Arts Moderne, Paris. Currently illustrating a book for the Prince of Monaco.
CLAUDE VENARD
Born 1913 in Paris. Was 6 years at ((Arts Appliqués) in "Atelier d' Arnold". Formed in 1935 the group "Forces Nouvelles" together with painters such as Gruber, Tal Coat, Humblot and Lasné. Also worked under the technical conservator Chauffrey in the Louvre. Has since 1936 exhibited regularly at the Salon d'Automne, Salon des Tuileries, Salon des Indépens dants and Salon de Mai, and has also held a number of solo exhibitions in Paris galleries, in London, Edinburgh, New York, Philadelphia and Basel and participated in collective exhibitions in U.S.A., Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Japan, in almost all capitals of Europe and at the Venice Biennale in 1948. Represented in the Musée d' Art Moderne, Paris (4 images), Whitney Museum, New York, Tokio Museum and several private collections .
BERNARD BUFFET
Born 1928 in Paris. Has been painting since he was 10 years old and started at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1944. He has exhibited at the Salon des moins de Trente Ans, Salon des Indépendants, Salon d'Automne and Salon de Mai. He won the Prix de la Critique in 1948. Solo exhibition in the Galerie Drouant-David in 1950. Has also exhibited in the Galerie du Séminaire des Arts, Brüssel 1949. Made decorations for the Concours des Jeunes Compagnies 1948. Represented in the Musée d' Art Moderne, Paris, Musée de Grenoble and a number of private collections in France and elsewhere.
EDOUARD GOERG
Born 1893 in Sidney of French parents. pupil of Maurice Dénis and Sérucier.
BERNARD LORJOU
Born 1908 in Blois (Loir-et-Cher). Autodidact. During a trip to Spain in 1931, he studied El Greco, Velasquez and Goya. He has received artistic means of expression from van Gogh and the Cubists. Has participated in the Salon des Tuileries, Salon des Indépendants and Salon d'Automne and is represented in the Musée d'Art Moderne, Paris.
JEAN OSOUF
Born 1898 in Vitry-le-Francois. Was a businessman until the age of 32, then started modeling at the Académie Scandinave under Despiau and Maillol. Exhibited at the Tuileries since 1934 and abroad, several times in Scandinavia (most recently in the autumn of 1951 in the Kunstnerforbundet). Represented in galleries in Paris, Belfast, Rotterdam, The Hague, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Gothenburg, New York, Oslo, Bergen.
