The forest floor is an active field where everything is connected to something else. A complex system in which decomposition, re-creation and life are inextricably intertwined.
By using still images as a starting point for moving collages, visual artist Eili Bråstad explores an abstract visual language that almost functions as a mantra to reach deeper into matter – or down below the surface. The forest floor, now photographed through a microscope, has been a recurring theme for her for several years. She collects the footage in Raisinvankka (Reisadalen) in Sápmi (in North Troms), where she grew up, and where she always finds inspiration.
Eili Bråstad (b. 1981, based in Oslo), works with film/video, photography, collage, sculpture and performance. Elements from her Kven and Sami background are often intertwined with an experimental, subcultural aesthetic. With a queer perspective she explores the connection between time, identity and movement. She has collaborated with a number of performing artists and musicians, and is constantly exploring the space between these encounters. Bråstad holds a BA in moving images from the Film Art School in Kabelvåg/UiT, and an MA in visual arts from KHiO.
This exhibition marks the end of a year and a half of recidency at Kunstnernes Hus.
