Program
C’ETAIT IL Y A 4 ANS (1954, 5 min)
Afrique sur Seine (1955, 21 min)
Lamb (La Lutte sénégalaise) (1963, 18 min)
Birago Diop, conteur (1981, 28 min)
"The films of Vieyra have some of the earliest documented reflections of African diasporic experiences on film. They are also occasionally conflicting and uncomfortable to watch, as they are so early in the development of African cinema that the colonial influence can be uncomfortable at times. These short films would provide good talking points after the screening. Also, the film 'Biago Diop' is a beautiful example of a filmmaker protecting the legacy of Diop the writer through this short documentary. It is like watching history within history. The filmmaker's son, Stephane, has also had an interesting journey looking after his father’s works." – Mosa Mpetha
About the host
Black History Month Norway works to document and highlight African and Afrodiasporic art and cultural heritage in Norway.
In 2025, BHMN explores the impactful ways we keep the rich stories of Africa and the diaspora alive – through art, education and in everyday life. We reflect on timeless and contemporary traditions as we celebrate the history and cultural heritage of Africa and the diaspora in Norway and around the world.
The screening is supported by the Municipality of Oslo and the Directorate of Culture, and carried out in collaboration with Kunstnernes Hus Cinema.
