Céline Sciamma follows up her internationally acclaimed masterpiece Portrait of a Lady on Fire with this spellbinding piece of magical-realism. As with her earlier films Tomboy, Water Lilies and Girlhood, Sciamma once again proofs her talent of masterfully and beautifully depicting the children's world.
About the film
Nelly has just lost her grandmother and is helping her parents clean out her mother's childhood home. She explores the house and the surrounding woods until one day she meets a girl her same age building a treehouse.
About the filmmaker
Céline Sciamma (b. 1978) studied French Literature before enrolling in the renowned film school La Fémis. Ever since her debut film Naissances des pieuvres/Water Lilies (2004) she continues to create iconic films that center around sexuality, feminism and the close study of her female characters. In 2019, her film Portrait of a Lady on Fire won the award for Best Script and the Queer Palm at the Cannes Film Festival.
About the introductory short film

Marthasykkeltiurbil (2021, 5 min) is a black and white silent film accompanied by a four-handed composition for church organ. One morning, Martha bikes to work from the cabin she lives in. As she cycles down the steep slopes towards town, a cabin tourist drives past her on the narrow gravel road. A capercaillie gets startled and flies into her front wheel.
Visual artist Lars Monrad Vaage works mainly with painting, drawing and film. A recurring motive in his works is the defiance of the seemingly invincible forces we are limited by.
