La Commune (Paris, 1871)

By Peter Watkins | Artist talk with Joen Vedel
Commune

In connection with Joen Vedel's exhibition NOW-TIME TV, we present Peter Watkins' monumental film La Commune (Paris, 1871). Through an innovative blend of documentary and fiction, the film reconstructs the dramatic 72 days of the Paris Commune, when the working class revolted against the French government and established a radically democratic self-governance. With its unique visual language and use of non-professional actors, Watkins draws parallels between history and present day, while challenging conventional storytelling and the role of media in society.

Prior to the screening, there will be a brief conversation between Joen Vedel and film curator Abirami Logendran where Vedel discusses how the film has inspired his work.
