Vilde, the Wild One
Tuesday 08.11.22
Welcome to the screening of Vibeke Løkkebergs film Vilde, the Wild One (1986). After the screening we are joined by Løkkeberg and film scholar and research librarian Eirik Frisvold Hanssen for a conversation.
The screening is a collaboration with Oslo Cinematheque and the National Library.
About the film
Vilde, the Wild One centres around the young woman Vilde (played by Løkkeberg), who has a mute 10-year-old daughter, a result of a relationship with her own stepfather. Together they live on a small male-dominated Norwegian island. Both Vilde and her daughter have to handle the extreme pressures the island society confronts them with.
Vilde, the Wild One was selected for the Un certain regard-programme in Cannes.
About the filmmaker
Vibeke Løkkeberg (b. 1945) is a Norwegian filmmaker, actor and writer. She began her career as an actress and directed several short films from 1970, including Abort (1972) and Regn (1975). Løkkeberg debuted as a feature film director with Åpenbaringen (1977), followed by Løperjenten (1981), Vilde, the Wild One (1986), Måker (1991), Der gudene er døde (1993) and Gazas tårer (2010).
Several of her films focus on women's experiences and the less idyllic sides of the nuclear family. Her provocative and controversial film art resulted in a lot of criticism from Norwegian critics, even though she received Filmkritikerprisen in 1982 for Løperjenten. Both Løperjenten and Vilde, the Wild One were also shown at the Cannes Film Festival.
For her latest feature film Gazas tårer (2010), she received numerous awards at renowned international festivals, such as Toronto, Amsterdam and Thessaloniki. In 2015, the Oslo Cinematheque set up a large retrospective and Løkkeberg was honoured with the Amanda Committee's Honorary Award.
