Based on the award-winning novel by Tarjei Vesaas, The Birds tells the tale of Mattis, an intellectually disabled man cared for by his lonely older sister, Hege. Their routine and isolated existence is interrupted when a lumberjack arrives at their lakeside cottage and falls in love with Hege, leaving Mattis fearful that he will lose his sister. With a limited understanding of the unpredictable power of nature, Mattis nonetheless turns to the elements to discover the answers — with unsettling result.

Anders T. Andersen (b. 1966) is a Norwegian director, writer and actor, educated at The Arts Educational Drama Schools in London. Since 2000, Andersen has worked as an actor at the National Theater. Among other things, he has interpreted Hamsun's main character in the dramatization of Hunger for the Hamsun jubilee and as Mefisto in Goethe's Faust. He debuted as a theater director in 2008 with the play Verdiløse menn, written by Christopher Nielsen.

Andersen has staged a series of novels and plays at several of Norway's leading theaters, amongst others Om Våren by Karl Ove Knausgård at Rogaland Theater and Kimen by Tarjei Vesaas at Det Norske Teater. He is also responsible for the stage performance of Lazarus at Det Norske Teate, partly written by David Bowie.

In January 2010, Andersen debuted as author with the novel Thomas Olsens Første Verdenskrig at Aschehoug publishing house.

The Birds, which is based on Tarjei Vesa's award-winning novel of the same name, is Andersen's feature film debut.
