One winter night in Holmlia, 15-year-old Benjamin loses his life – killed by 19-year-old Joe Erling, simply because he has dark skin. A year later, Benjamin's mother, Marit, faces every parent's worst nightmare: the trial against the man who killed her son.

We follow Marit's struggle in court, and through flashbacks to the life before the tragedy, two destinies are woven together. Benjamin grows up surrounded by friends and a mother who takes care of him, while Joe Erling is shaped by an environment characterized by neglect. Both live in areas of low social status. Benjamin experiences stigmatization by the police, and Joe Erling drifts into the neo-Nazi Boot Boys environment in search of safety.

The film depicts the vulnerability of young boys trying to find themselves and a sense of belonging – and how catastrophic the consequences can be when hate is given room to grow. 25 years after the murder of Benjamin Hermansen, this is a story we still must tell – about racism, loss, and the hope for reconciliation in a society that must not forget.
