How can we remember the painful? On Sunday evening we will be screening the films Reconstructing Utøya (Carl Javér, 2018) and Notes on a Memorial (Jonas Dahlberg, 2018). The screenings are introduced and followed by a conversation about artistic and cinematic adaptations of the July 22 events. The event is a collaboration with the Department of Art and Media Studies at NTNU and the National Library. The conversation will be held in Norwegian.

About the event

Reconstructing Utøya (Carl Javér, 2018, 1h 31 min, Norwegian language) documents the process of four survivors from Utøya coming together with a psychologist and twelve young people who want to understand and help them understand. Together, they reconstruct the survivors' memories in a film studio in northern Norway. Before the film, we'll be screening the video Notes on a Memorial (2018, 35 min, English language) by artist Jonas Dahlberg about the process and politics around the memorial site of the massacre on July 22, 2011. The film had its Norwegian premiere at Kunstnernes Hus Kino last year.

As part of the event, the book Bearbeidelser (Universitetsforlaget, editor Anne Gjelsvik) about and with artistic adaptations of 22 July will be launched, with a number of contributions that reflect on how the terrorist incident has been treated in various art forms. The National Library is organizing the conference Artistic adaptations of 22 July on Monday, November 30.
