What does Kunstnernes Hus mean to you?

Hello there, artists in Norway! We are working to preserve and upgrade Kunstnernes Hus, and need your feedback to be able to do so in the best possible way. We hope therefore you will answer the survey below.

Background information

The preservation efforts are primarily focused on securing the building: the load-bearing structures are failing, there are water leaks, and the indoor climate is critical for both art and people (as low as 5°C in winter and up to 30°C in summer). The building is under the supervision of heritage authorities, and original materials must therefore be used—making the process extra costly. We have received just over 40 million NOK, but the project is estimated to cost nearly 150 million.

The upgrades in this project mainly involve measures to meet contemporary standards for art, universal accessibility, updated and more accessible exhibition spaces, and sustainable solutions. At the same time, we are inspired by the mission described in the original architectural competition in 1928, which stated:

"This is not about an art museum where recognized masterpieces are to be preserved. On the contrary, this building should express that it is connected to life and work..."

The competition program also included, in addition to exhibition spaces, "a hall for celebrations, lectures, concerts, etc." and "club rooms, group rooms, and social spaces." These functions were not realized in the building that was completed in 1930. In connection with the preservation and upgrade efforts, we want to explore what this clubhouse intention could mean for artists 100 years on. How can the house continue to offer an alternative—a lasting space for art, reflection, and togetherness?

We have formulated some questions that we will bring into the further planning process, and we hope you will answer them. Feel free to share them as well!
