Manifest
Manifest is an ongoing project by Andrea Geyer that features sewn banners with silver text on white ground, which will be mounted on the façade of Kunstnernes Hus. Accompanied by a newsprint handout and a workshop, the work addresses the museum as a contested site of speech and politics and asks what we need from the museum as a public space in the current moment.
The piece is made possible by a collaboration with Fritt Ord.

About the piece
The sentences on the facade's banners read:
“I NEEED A MUSEUM WHERE I CAN FIND MORE THAN MYSELF” and, in Norwegian,
“I WANT A MUSEUM THAT FEELS ITS FLOORS TREMBLE WHEN OTHER MUSEUMS ARE DESTROYED IN WAR”.
What they have in common is that they focus on the visitor to the institution rather than the institution itself. The sentences are inspired by Geyer’s longstanding interest in the histories of museums, including the progressive origins of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, founded by Grace McCann Morley in 1935, and more recent calls for museums to serve as refuges for critical voices and vulnerable populations.
For the related workshop on Thursday, February 22, visitors are invited to come together in small groups to talk about the role a public museum could, should and might play in their daily lives: How would you like to see yourself, your body, your views, ideas and experiences as you move within this institution? What are experiences that can only happen within the context of a museum? What do you need from a museum today? The workshop is open for all ages, but most suitable for humans above the age of 12.
A poster-handout, an edition of 150 copies, is also available in the reception.
