Jannik Abel

Frozen History V og IV
Frozen History V og IV
The two prints, which are only available at Kunstnernes Hus, are based on historical photographs of Kunstnernes Hus and Oslo city center. They are part of the series "Frozen History," which consists of nine images of Oslo photographed by Jannik Abel's ancestors. Abel carefully reviewed the photographic archive, zooming in on photographs where buildings were often the main subject. However, in contrast to the architectural interests of her ancestors, Jannik focused on the people inhabiting the images, occasionally cropping out the buildings in the background. The original glass plates are now part of the National Library's collection.
Abels Kunsthandel, Norway's oldest art gallery, was founded by the artist's great-great-grandparents in 1864. The gallery not only sold art but also produced photographs that became central to Norway's nation-building project, including the production of postcards for wide distribution. Jannik Abel broke away from the family business, and the gallery ceased to exist. Abel, who is a trained photographer, continues to photograph actively and, in recent years, has documented protest movements in Norway.

The over 400 wooden objects in one of the skylights represent a collection of all the tree species in Norway and come from fallen trees that Jannik Abel collected and shaped by hand with simple tools. By peeling away the outer layers, the artist allows us to get to know the inside of the trees, which is usually both invisible and unknown due to the ever-disappearing proximity to nature.
Price: NOK 2,000-8,000
(+ 5% art fee on all purchases over NOK 2,000)
