The Drawing Biennal 2008

Tegnetriennalen 2008 066 11042008

Since 2002, the Drawing Biennale has been held every other year by Tegnerforbundet with a changing organisational form. The biennial is based on submitted works and is curated by an external jury, showing in varying venues. In 2008 the fourth drawing biennial was held at Kunstnernes Hus. This biennial did not have an overarching theme, but the jury picked up certain tendencies they wanted to emphasize, such as narrative, cinematic and surreal expressions, as well as an expanded use of materials.

THE FOURTH DRAWING BIENNIAL

To be part of the jury for the drawing biennial can easily lead to enthusiasm, but also frustration when going through 368 applications. Of these, 44 were selected to participate, 27 women and 17 men with a range in age from 23 to 69 years. Many who work with drawing now, holds a high artistic level.

We are happy and proud that this year we are showing the drawing biennial at Kunstnernes Hus. It is interesting that this large exhibition of drawing art takes place at the same time as Lillehammer Art Museum is showing its major initiative LINE IN MOTION. Drawing through 150 years. Never before have so many drawing artists been shown at the same time. It is a fantastic manifestation of drawing's vitalization of the Norwegian art scene.

The range of expressions in this year's biennial is great. It is clear to see that the rich narrative tradition from England has gained fertile ground among younger artists. The cinematic and surreal have gained many performers in Norway in recent years. In the field of drawing, new tendencies are quickly captured. The many possibilities of drawing for a narrowing and deepening of problems of form are also present in the exhibition. So is the expanded use of materials that have long been part of the props in the studio but are now being used in more baroque ways. Masking tape becomes the starting point for installation. Paper is used to build complex sculptures and installations. The ephemeral and non-permanent is made the main ingredient in art production. Commitment to the environment is also a tendency the jury noticed. Site-specific works as well. The drawing leaves the sketchpad and spreads across large monumental wall surfaces.

It is a pleasure for Tegnerforbundet and the jury to welcome you to the fourth Drawing Biennale.
