Mette Tronvoll

Portraits
In Mette Tronvoll's works — her personal project — we encounter large formats, visual equivalents of the novel, characterised by an intense capacity for observation, a painterly, atmospheric language and a striking talent for narrative.
Here we find individuals — portraits —juxtapositions set in local and exotic, familiar and unfamiliar surroundings, in a selection of series from her immense production.
The viewer's thoughts are immediately drawn towards the individual's aims, needs and exertions in the search for recognition and reassurance about his or her place in the broader context, for the ideal, and wherever possible for understanding about his or her relations to other people. Insight into how the world is ordered and the search for and noting of traces from people's lives can put both the subjects and the viewers in a position to recognise a common interest in working together and in harmony with this broader context.
In order to attain such an ideal it is a philosophical requirement to be able to develop one's understanding freely. Mette Tronvoll invites her viewers into just such a process on her own premisses.
Parallel to this cultivation of insight, one is drawn into an atmospherically beautiful depiction of the world, in which colour, light and nuance emphasise the form, and the content assumes a more subordinate role.
With her natural sensitivity and her knowledge of the photographic medium, the artist has worked in close and inspiring collaboration with Kunstnernes Hus.
It is a privilege to be able to show such a large volume of her work — and on such a large scale. We are happy to present this exhibition to our visitors and to realise our ambition to show significant creative work at the intersection point between Norwegian and international art. Many thanks to Mette Tronvoll!
