About the artist
At the age of 16, Karsten knew he wanted to become a painter. He sought to become an artist not only through actually painting, but through experiences. He sought to learn through experience and travel. He was inspired by a number of artists, especially Edvard Munch, whom he met for the first time at Åsgårdstrand in 1901. But he was also influenced by Matisse. Today he is considered one of the most important Norwegian colourists. In addition to working color-focused, he had an ability to capture the most characteristic with the help of thick, expressive brushstrokes.
