About the exhibition

In the first room, 86 pictures by Eilif Peterssen were exhibited. The painter Kristoffer Singid-Larsen chose and exhibited a range of paintings from Peterssen's first studies in Munich in 1873 until the turn of the century. Among the exhibition were a handful of his more famous paintings as well as studies that had never been exhibited before.

In the second hall, paintings by Signe Scheel exhibited. The paintings were selected and hung up by Scheel herself Sand the painters, and close friends, Henrik Sørensen and Jean Heiberg. The exhibition gave a retrospective look at her works. The exhibition took place 9 years after Scheel had stopped painting.

About the artists

Eilif Peterssen was born on September 4, 1852 in Christiania. From a young age he showed great interest in painting, and with art-loving parents he was encouraged to follow the artistic path. Early in his career as a painter, he was discovered by the painter Hans Gude and Christian Krogh, among others, and strongly encouraged him to continue on the path of art. As a young artist, he developed a preference for history painting, although he also produced a number of portraits and landscapes during his career.

Scheel grew up in a family of civil servants and showed an interest and talent for drawing and painting at a young age. As an artist, she became interested in the use of light. In this context, one of her great influences from art history was Rembrandt. Like Rembrandt, she often used hidden light sources, which means that it is not possible to know what the light source is. It has been said by some art critics that her works were of lower quality. Her painting technique was time-consuming and her brushstrokes were 'choppy'. But on the other hand, it was also stated that she was a talented colorist. That is, she worked a lot on how the colors worked together.

Relation to each other - Scheel trained with Eilif Peterssen in 1887. This influenced her to work more with landscapes.
