Avgangsutstilling Master

19.05.12 – 26.05.12
2012 Khio

The exhibition focuses on the whole of Oslo as a scene of artistic activity and discussion. In this way, the graduation exhibition moves from the traditional institutional framework, to become the first step on the way to helping to shape the multifaceted, and largely self-organised, art life that characterizes Oslo today.
The independently located exhibitions represent an alternative group exhibition format that gives exhibitors the freedom to work on all aspects of their individual presentations.

About the exhibition

This year, the graduating MA students at the Art Academy in Oslo have decided to do things differently. Instead of showing the graduation exhibition in a gallery or museum, the class will use the entire city of Oslo. Each of this year's twenty graduating students has a choice of a place, room or arena to show their artwork in. The result is the graduation exhibition "20 MA Exhibitions" with Kunstnernes hus as base and information centre. From this starting point, you can go on a walk and visit twenty different exhibitions all over the city.

The idea behind the exhibition is both to challenge the traditional framework surrounding the graduation exhibition and to exploit the city's inherent dynamism. The aim is to create a unique situation and a specific context around each individual exhibition work. In this way, exciting new encounters between the audience and the work are achieved. The exhibition has been planned and developed with the help of four curators, critics and artists: Per Platou, Terje Nicolaisen, Bo Krister Wallström and Geir Haraldseth.

There is great variation in the students' approach to the exhibition. The formats range from site-specific works based on context (be it the public or private sphere), to works that make use of mass media (such as television broadcasts), to traditional hanging of paintings in a gallery space and event-based works such as a performance or a lecture.

The catalog for the exhibition serves as an exhibition guide with a concise presentation of the exhibited works. The catalog also contains a city map showing where the exhibition locations are located. The catalogue, including maps and documentation material can be downloaded as a PDF file at www.kunstakademiet.no You choose how you get from place to place, whether you walk, use public transport or borrow one of the free bikes at Kunstnernes hus. Those who visit all the exhibition locations and return to the starting point with 20 stamps as proof can collect a free beer from the restaurant at Kunstnernes Hus!

The form of this year's graduation exhibition is perhaps challenging for the public. But our hope is that the exhibition invites an interaction with the city and the artworks that surprises and stimulates and offers an experience that you would not otherwise get.

- Jesper Alvær (head of studies) & Henrik Plenge Jakobsen (professor)
