Aurdal / Mugaas

04.03.16 – 08.05.16
2016 Web Frekvenser Aurdal 1061

The exhibition AURDAL / MUGAAS is a unique collaborative project between the artists Siri Aurdal (b. 1937) and Eline Mugaas (b. 1969). The sculpture project with Siri Aurdal is one of the most ambitious ventures for Kunstnernes Hus in many years both in scale and scope, and will be presented in the summer of 2016 in a new version in Vigelandsparken under the auspices of Oslo Pilot.

About the exhibition

The motivation for the exhibition is to reintroduce Aurdal's pioneering artistry to Norwegian art history. Aurdal's work, on the whole, has not been shown in Norway for over 30 years, and the project stems from Mugaas' long-standing work to document Aurdal's artistry for a larger publication that will be launched at the exhibition opening. Mugaas has also created an extensive series of new photographs that engage in dialogue with Aurdal's sculptures. The exhibition is curated by Ida Kierulf at Kunstnernes Hus.

About the artists

Aurdal, who was active in the 60s and 70s, was innovative in the Norwegian context through her experimental use of materials and her monumental installations in which the public took an active and co-creative role. As one of the artists behind the radical artist group GRAS, Aurdal's modular sculptures and choice of materials express a belief in the political, collective and social role of art. Her wave-shaped sculptures are made of prefabricated industrial materials, and were shown for the first time at Kunstnernes Hus in 1969. The sculptures that are now being reconstructed are produced from fiberglass-reinforced polyester tubes and will fill the entire width, length and height of the skylight hall. This was a new product at the end of the 60s - created for the upcoming oil industry in Norway - which is still used today.

Eline Mugaas, who is one of Norway's most renowned photographic artists, will present a larger series of photographs from the 90s to the present day. Mugaas is best known for her photographic investigations of urban environments and architecture. Facing Aurdal's sculptures, the exhibition will focus on the spatial and sculptural aspects of her photographs. In addition, the exhibition includes a series of graphic prints and three installations in colored Plexiglas by Siri Aurdal, as well as a series of works created by the two artists together. The project depicts an exceptional meeting between two artists from different generations who add new dimensions to each other, and who together create a completely new story.

Oslo Pilot is a two-year project curated by Eva González-Sancho and Per Gunnar Eeg-Tverbakk. Oslo Pilot is initiated and financed by the Culture Agency in Oslo municipality and aims to prepare the ground for a future art biennale in Oslo.

The publication Siri Aurdal by Eline Mugaas is published by the American publisher Primary Information, and is supported by Oslo Pilot, Kunstnernes Hus, Fritt Ord and the Norwegian Culture Council.

The exhibition is supported by the Norwegian Cultural Council, Billedkunstnernes Hjelpefond, Vederlagsfondet, Bergersenstiftelsen, The Lindbäck Langård foundation, the Norwegian Photography Fund and the Government's exhibition grant.
