Atelier Nord

25.10.69 – 16.11.69

Atelier Nord held an exhibition at Kunstnernes Hus consisting of works by Norwegian and international artists. The same show was also presented at Galleri 1 in Bergen soon after, between November 27th - December 23rd 1969. When the studio started in 1965 as a graphic arts workshop, part of the purpose was to make it possible for artists from different countries to come to Oslo to work. Before this exhibition, the studio had also toured internationally with several of their exhibitions.

After a structural change in the 90s and 2000s, with the creation of a computer and video workshop, Atelier Nord's task has gradually changed to present and communicate media art.

Artists in the exhibition: Isolde Baumgart, Tim Edmunds, Carmen Gracia, Herman Hebler, Knut Jørgensen, Shiou-Ping Liao, Hedy Louise Lotherington, Takesada Matsutani, Miodrag Nagorni, Helen Piddington, Jean Claude Reynal, Zdenka Rusova, Alse Raaen, Reidar Rudjord, Ingeborg Sæther, Kenji Yoshida

WHAT IS ATELIER NORD?

Atelier Nord was started in 1963. The purpose was to make it possible for artists from different nations to come together to work in Oslo. The studio stands for artistic openness, a belief in the fruitfulness of collaboration and confrontation between artists with different cultural backgrounds and different visual expressions. All artists participating in this exhibition have traveled from their own country to Norway at least once. Here they have worked in a vital and dynamic group in Norwegian daily life where the traditions are partly very different from those in their own countries. In contact with this new environment, they have been able to express themselves and develop further. Perhaps they have also changed their graphic form of expression through their contact with Norwegian culture. Graphic artists from fifteen nations have participated in the work within this young group. Several Norwegian artists have also benefited positively from their involvement with the studio. Exhibitions from Atelier Nord have traveled between museums, universities and galleries in eight countries. One exhibition is currently being presented through France, and another is planned for the United States. In 1968, the film "Linje", which is about the work with graphics, was shot in the studio.
