The Extended Instrument vol. 2

Concert by Jan Wiese
Jan wiese 180426

The Extended Instrument vol. 2 is a further development of Jan Wiese's long-standing work with live electronics and extended instrument practices. The project is based on real-time connections between wind instruments (oboe and English horn), midi wind controllers, gesture sensors and software-based systems in Ableton Live that control both audio processing and video material.

Live electronics, improvisation and interactive video

The music arises in a field between composition and improvisation, where the wind notes function as structuring and shaping impulses for both sound and visual events. The video elements are integrated as an active part of the musical form, - as small symbolic stories or episodes with their own character.

The concert consists of five such episodes. Jan Wiese breaks up with short verbal reflections between each of them - about his own inspiration, the artistic choices and technical arrangements.

The Extended Instrument vol. 1 took place in Oslo Concert Hall in 2024. This performance represents a significant step forward for the concept.
