About the workshop
Andrea Grundt Johns will introduce the participants to the artist's book, what it is and can be, how she works with the book format and how and why she uses risography. Here she focuses especially on the sensory aspect of the visual – about haptic visuality, tactility and how the choice of paper affects the final expression. Another important focus of the workshop is sustainability – not only in the printing technique itself, but in the entire creative process.
Using exclusively recycled materials, we will produce artist's books. Participants will be introduced to a simple bookbinding technique and the use of the risograph. We delve into what is often overlooked: the materials we already have around us, ideas we have previously discarded, and how these can be given new life. Participants are given the opportunity to work with their own ideas, sketches, text or images, and are invited to bring along any paper (A3) they may have lying around. We also use leftover material from Kunstnernes Hus and from Andrea's own production, and let coincidences and limitations shape what we create. Together we explore how we can give new life to what already exists.About Andrea Grundt Johns
Andrea Grundt Johns (b. 1989, Oslo) holds a BFA in fine art photography from the Valand Academy in Gothenburg and an MFA from the Norwegian Academy of Fine Arts in Bergen. In 2021-22, she had a combined research and artist residency at Harvard University with a focus on artist books and East Asian art. Andrea has extensive experience as a curator and lecturer at a number of museums and galleries, as well as a senior lecturer in photography at KMD (2023). She has participated in a number of exhibitions and art book festivals in Norway and abroad, and is represented with books by, among others, Printed Matter Inc. in New York and IACK in Japan. Andrea is also a member of the artist group Solastalgia, which works with emotional reactions to human-induced landscape changes.
Based on a critical approach to photography and the sight-centered Western culture, Andrea investigates how we can see with other senses. Through cameraless photographs, artist books, text and installations, she develops a sensual and poetic exploration of sight, rhythm and touch. Artist books have been an important part of Andrea’s practice for over a decade.
A central theme in her practice is the human relationship with nature – both cultural and industrial in a historical, contemporary and speculative future perspective. She works with natural and man-made landscapes in various phases of transformation; our relationship with stone, mountains and mining, with a particular focus on the use of resources. As part of this exploration, she combines themes and methods, and challenges her own practice: how can one reclaim material and immaterial resources in an artistic practice?
