Workshop on Sustainable Application Techniques

With Line Solberg Dolmen | For adults
Saturday 06.05.23
Line kurs 2

Come and be inspired in the meeting with visual artist Line Solberg Dolmen! Express yourself creatively with Mola, a type of application technique developed by indigenous people in Panama and Colombia. You will also learn about Line's artistry and how over several years she has explored application techniques from various cultures around the world and continued to work with them in new formats.

No prior knowledge is required to join this course, but it is also suitable for you with some experience, for instance if you work with creative subjects at school or are a performing artist.

About the workshop

Mola is an application technique that consists of several layers of fabric that are placed on top of each other. Afterwards, you cut down into the material, fold it to the side, and sew the edges with small stitches. Mola is similar to an archaeological excavation where different colors and patterns emerge successively down the layers.

The technique was developed by the Guna people, a group of indigenous people active in Panama and Colombia. Here, Mola is used as the backbone of blouses. The motifs range from geometric shapes to plants, animals, and in recent times also to pop-cultural references such as Coke bottles and electric guitars. The degree of difficulty is determined by how small and intricate the pattern is: even a simple form can give an interesting expression.

We serve coffee, tea and fruit along the way.

About the instructor

Line Solberg Dolmen is a visual artist and primarily works with textiles. She has an MA from KHIO, a BA from the Department of Art Academy in Tromsø as well as a journeyman's certificate in dress and suit sewing.

Over time, she has researched patching techniques from various cultures around the world, and is concerned with the utilization and the aesthetic possibilities and the small components that are otherwise often considered worthless. In her works, which are often hand-stitched, she incorporates materials and elements that connote urban environments, including graffiti, fence tarpaulins and road signs.
