About the film

This eight-hour masterpiece follows a family that has been farming for eleven generations in a mountain village with 47 inhabitants in the prefecture of Kyoto, Japan. The film consists of four chapters that have been filmed over a period of 14 months. The film is both a monumental and sober portrait of a family that has lived in constant dialogue with nature, and of a branch of work that is about to disappear. The film gives the audience unique access to the protagonists' everyday life and work as well as changes in the landscape. Thus, ultimately, it also becomes a portrait of the duration itself.
