Luca Guadagnino's sensual adaptation of William S. Burroughs' novel, we meet William Lee (Daniel Craig), an American expat in 1950s Mexico City. His solitary existence among the city's nightclubs and bars, populated by drug addicts, hustlers, and other lost souls, takes a new turn when he encounters young student Eugene Allerton (Drew Starkey). Queer is an intoxicating tale about the possibility of love in a hopeless world. The film, shot entirely at Rome's Cinecittà studios, is according to the director himself a homage to the epic films of Powell and Pressburger. Craig delivers what might be the performance of his career in this visually lush drama.
We are screening Queer in collaboration with Vega Scene and Cinemateket. The collaboration aims to raise awareness of arthouse cinemas and unite in creating engagement for film as an art form. All three venues have curated programs where artistic value is a key criterion for selection, and where films are viewed in context. Together we import films that would otherwise not be shown in Norway, bringing them out of the shadows and onto the big screen.
