Welcome to a film program presented in conjunction with Jelsen Lee Innocent’s exhibition Truth Has No Friends in The West, on view at Nitja until February 23, 2025.

We also invite you to stay after the film program for a launch of the publication Ban m zòrèy ou — Lend me your ear – a dialogue between the filmmaker Lunise Cerin and artist Jelsen Lee Innocent, fresh off the press from Hverdag Books.

Nou La – which translates to “we are here” – stands as a testament to Haiti’s enduring heritage and artistic ingenuity. Through Jelsen's curated selection of films, this program offers a glimpse into the vibrant and multifaceted perspectives from Haiti and its expansive diaspora. These works delve into themes of art, spirituality, and resistance, serving as apertures that uncover Haiti’s cultural heritage, its lasting global impact, and the interwoven legacies of colonialism, media narratives, and cultural representation

About the artist

Jelsen Lee Innocent (b. 1983, Brookyln, USA) is a Haitian-American artist based in Norway whose practice examines the broad and structural implications of Western hegemony and its impacts on the ecologies, culture, and sovereignty of Haiti, the Caribbean and beyond. Innocent has exhibited across the United States and internationally. Notably, he has been part of group exhibitions including the traveling exhibiton Men of Change produced by The Smithsonian Institute, The 32nd Biennial of Graphic Arts in Slovenia, and at Art Hub Copenhagen, House of Foundation in Moss, and Kunsthall Oslo. Innocent has also recently participated in conversations and hosted workshops at MUNCH, Astrup Fernley, ASSATA, and Kunstnerforbundet.
