Filmmaker meets filmmaker - Ellen Ugelstad og Jorunn Myklebust Syversen

Welcome to this Spring's first Filmmaker meets filmmaker at Kunstnernes Hus Kino. This time with Jorunn Myklebust Syversen and Ellen Ugelstad, in conversation with Mariken Halle. After the conversation there will be a double viewing of The Green Valley (Ugelstad, 2018) and Hoggeren (Myklebust Syversen, 2017)
Jorunn Myklebust Syversen and Ellen Ugelstad have developed an exploratory way into formats as well as production methods. None of them have a traditional film school background. What processes are at stake in their work? How can one create production structures that suit the individual project? What locks an artistic process, and what feels liberating?
Through the conversation, we take a deep dive into Jorunn Myklebust Syversen's work - with Hoggeren and her new movie Disco - and Ellen Ugelstad on working methods and processes that are related to the making of The Green Valley and Making Sense Together.
Filmmaker meets filmmaker is organised by Mariken Halle, Itonje Søimer Guttormsen, Gunhild Enger, Vibeke Heide and Ellen Ugelstad, in collaboration with Kunstneres Hus Kino. Events have received support from the Norwegian Film Institute, Film Cultural Measures and FRITT ORD; there will be two events during the Spring 2019.
About Jorunn Myklebust Syversen
Jorunn Myklebust Syversen (b. 1978) graduated from Academy of Fine Arts in Bergen in 2005. Since then she has produced her own video works and short films. Her works have been shown at exhibitions and film festivals nationally and internationally. In 2014, the collaboration with film producer Maria Ekerhovd and her company Merfilm started. The feature film debut Hoggeren premiered in Norwegian cinemas in 2017. Anders Baasmo Christensen starred, whilst other characters in the film are played by Syversen's family and Benjamin Helstad. The film received nominations for best lead role and supporting role at the Amanda Awards. Currently, Myklebust Syversen is working on her second feature film Disco as part of the program "Nye Veier til spillefilm" developed by the Norwegian Film Institute.
About Ellen Ugelstad
Ellen Ugelstad is a filmmaker working at the intersection of visual art and film, educated at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Through her documentary studies, she goes into depth in dualities such as normality and madness, power and impotence, sickness and health. In 2012, her film Indian summer was shown at the Autumn Exhibition in Oslo and nominated for the International Young Talent Award at DOK Leipzig, Nordic Dox Award at CPH: DOX and nominated to Gullruten for best director and best documentary. Over the past few years, she veered towards more hybrid and genre-free formats. She received the script award for The Meeting Room in 2017, the Gullstolen for The Green Valley in 2018 and her film Making Sense Together premiered in the competition program for best Nordic documentary during the Oslo Pix in June 2018.
About Mariken Halle
Mariken Halle (1982) is a filmmaker, born in Oslo. She wanted to become an actor as a child and has developed recording methods in her films that give great freedom to the actor. Halle studied at the Nordland Art and Film School (2003-2005), and at the Valand Academy (2007-2011). She has made two feature films; Kanskje i morgen and Verden Venter, together with Clara Bodén and Ronnja Svenning Berge in the company Vapen och Dramatik. Today, Halle lives in Oslo and is part of the production collective Alternativet.
