Dahomey + Status Also Die

Welcome to an exclusive double screening of Statues Also Die(1953) and Dahomey(2024).
Chris Marker and Alain Resnais' film Statues Also Die (Les statues meurent aussi) takes a critical look at the Western and colonial gaze directed toward African art objects. 70 years later, the same themes are addressed in Mati Diop's film Dahomey, which depicts the return of 26 royal treasures from the Kingdom of Dahomey to their historical homeland in present-day Benin.
Dahomey won the Golden Bear at the Berlinale in 2024 and was nominated for an Oscar the same year. The films are specially imported by Kunstnernes Hus Kino and are screened only here.

Fear Eats the Soul
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the film Fear Eats the Soul (1974, Rainer Werner Fassbinder), Kunstnernes Hus Cinema is placing a special focus on xenophobia, racism, and discrimination. Through the film series Fear Eats the Soul, we will explore how migration and migration experiences have been depicted in cinema over the past decades, as well as the diversity of expressions that address these themes. Throughout the fall, there will be an extensive discursive program featuring film screenings, discussions, and lectures.
The series is supported by The Norwegian Film Institute.
