Sold out! Beyond the Visible - Hilma af Klint

by Halina Dyrschka
27.09.20 – 11.10.20

Hilma af Klimt was an abstract painter, long before there 'was' abstract painting, forgotten and hidden under many layers of historical mistakes and patriarchal omissions. This many-faceted documentary serves as a correction, and shows how Klint was inspired by spiritualism, modern science and the natural world when in 1906 she began creating paintings that were unparalleled in art history until then.

Pleas note that all screenings are now sold out.

I was told I was a pioneer and comitted to an uncomprehended working method.

Hilma af Klint

About the film

Beyond the Visible tells the story of Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) and her struggle to create the art she wanted to create: series of abstract paintings with colours and shapes that had no parallels in the art world at the time. Hilma af Klint was one of the first artists to explore the combination of spiritual and abstract art in her quest to paint what was beyond reality.

She wanted to place her large paintings directly on the floor, but was not interested in exhibiting them or selling them. For decades after her death, they stood in an attic, since fa Klint herself thought they had to wait for a future where an audience could meet her art with a broader horizon of understanding.

This film wonders how it has been possible that Hilma af Klint has been forgotten for so many years, and how this is related to the fact that her art has not been for sale. For is it the commercial interests that control the canon?
