The Shape That Lives in the Stone is a performance-lecture by Marianne Heier that weaves together anecdotes from Kunstnernes Hus’ history with references to classical and ancient art history.

On Tuesday, September 16, 2025 a small group consisting of the house’s staff and students from The Oslo School of Architecture and Design attended the presentation revolving around art’s material conditions, freedom, and resilience through time.
A physical manifestation of this unique event is now hidden at the bottom of the staircase: a 2,500-year-old tetradrachm, mured into the wall as an amulet for the House’s future. The coin, however, bears a deep cut: someone once doubted its value and wanted to verify it was solid silver. Like art, the silver coin exists in an unresolved relationship to conventional understandings of value.

Om kunstneren
Marianne Heier (f. 1969, Oslo) er billedkunstner utdannet ved kunstakademiet i Milano og Oslo. Kunstnerskapet hennes omtales gjerne som institusjonskritisk; selv kaller hun arbeidene sine aktiveringer. Hun tar ofte utgangspunkt i spørsmål tilknyttet ressursfordeling, maktdistribusjon og demokrati. Gaven og dens iboende makt er tilbakevendende i Heiers kunstnerskap, både som tema og strategi. Gjennom metoder lånt fra bl.a. aktivisme, teater og antropologi forskyver hun innarbeidede hierarkier og lar undertrykte perspektiver og uutforskede muligheter komme til syne. Resultatet presenteres som performance, tekst, installasjon, objekter, foto, video eller forskjellige former for arkitektoniske intervensjoner.
