Arthur (Josh O'Connor) is a British archaeologist in search of his great love. His sixth sense for finding hidden, ancient treasures has led him to Italy. Here, he works with a group of grave robbers who make quick money on the black market by selling the historical objects they find.

About the film

With a delightful 1980s colourway, LA CHIMERA – TREASURES OF THE PAST is an adventurous journey between the living and the dead, between romance and capitalism, between partying and loneliness.

The film is inspired by La Grande Razzia, when individual Italians began to hunt for burial chambers with over 2,000 year old Etruscan treasures, while others considered the objects sacred, and were strongly critical of the grave robberies.

Perhaps everyone in the film is looking for something you will never be able to find anyway. Josh O'Connor plays against a large ensemble of delightful characters, including Isabella Rossellini as Flora.

La Chimera is a romantic, charming and lively fable. The kind of film that can make you see the world with completely new eyes.

About the filmmaker

This is the fourth feature film by Italian Alice Rohrwacher. Her previous films The Wonders and Happy as Lazzaro both won prizes at Cannes, and the filmmaker has received praise from the likes of Martin Scorsese, Sofia Coppola and Greta Gerwig. With her new film La Chimera, she again participated in the main competition at Cannes and has confirmed her place as one of European cinema's leading directors.
