Blue Box
Welcome to the screening of Blue Box, a documentary about the little-known history of Israel's biggest real estate transaction.
The story is told by Israeli filmmaker Michal Weits, the grand daughter of Yosef Weitz, who was a key figure in the The Jewish National Fund (JNF) that organized the transactions. We follow the filmmakers investigations into her grandfather's actions which leads to an uncomfortable exploration of Israel's past.
About the film
Blue Box is a brave, authoritatively documented account of how the Jewish National Fund (JNF) acquired land in Palestine before and after the creation of the State of Israel.
JNF's beloved blue box campaign was internationally successful in raising support for the purchase and forestation of land in Palestine in preparation for a possible Jewish state. The trees have since spread their roots, but evidence remains of the Palestinian communitites displaced by the once fragile seedings. Joseph Weits, filmmaker Michal Weits' grandfather was a key figure in the organization, known as "the father of Israeli forests" as he was overseeing the land and forestry initiatives in JNF.
His private diaries reveal the story of the massive land takeover that led to the creation of the State of Israel. In conversations with her family, the filmmaker questions her grandfather's actions, which result in an exploration of Israel's past and an uncomfortable truth.
