About
The exhibition focuses on drawing as a means to explore and process human expression. In it, the curator seeks to create a larger space for reflection around drawing; not to understand it solely as artistic expression, but also as innate language and as a potential in human beings in general: through looking at a drawing, we can see both inwards and outwards, and by drawing, we can formulate what we see. This formulation is not merely an imitation or depiction, for it can take the form of visual ideas or reflection, or it can be a way of searching for something or a means for questioning. The Drawing Triennial 2019 presents works by artists who probe their world through lines, who use drawing as a method for approaching who we are.
The exhibition also draws connections to prehistoric phenomena and drawing as a form of communication that predates writing. It therefore emphasises drawing as a primary form of human expression – in both a physical and a mental sense. The Drawing Triennial’s mediation programme for the public Before and After the Line enables greater reflection around drawing as a universally human form of expression and a tool for understanding the world around us. The programme will function as an activating and reflective frame around the main exhibition.
