A warm welcome to the screening of The Souvenir (2019) by British film maker Joanna Hogg. An in-depth portrait of a young woman, a destructive love and a precise analysis of the British upper middle class.

The film is screened in collaboration with Cinemateket and Vega Scene.

"The director confirms her status as a modern visionary with a deft, distinctive and deeply personal story of young love."

- The Guardian

About the film

The Souvenir takes place in London in the 1980s, where young student Julie (played by Honor Swinton Byrne) pursues her aspirations to become a filmmaker. When Julie makes the acquaintance of the charismatic, chain-smoking and sophisticated art historian Anthony (Tom Burke), a passionate but dangerous relationship begins to develop.

The film is highly based on director Joanna Hogg's own experiences and biography. The title is taken from an 18th century painting by Jean-Honoré Fragonard that Hogg's former lover introduced her to. Details such as the location and décor of the director's London apartment, as well as some replicas and entire dialogues based on old letters were accurately reconstructed in the film.
